Board Chair and Vice-Chair Re-Appointed for 2022 Saskatoon City Councillor Hilary Gough Joins the Board
At its regular public meeting of the Saskatoon Board of Police Commissioners held Thursday, January 13, the Board re-appointed both Commissioner Jyotsna (Jo) Custead as Chair and Commissioner Kearney Healy as Vice Chair for another year. Saskatoon City Councillor Mairin Loewen’s board position will be taken over by Councillor Hilary Gough.
The Saskatoon Board of Police Commissioners for 2022 includes:
• Chair Commissioner Jo Custead
• Vice Chair Commissioner Kearney Healy
• Commissioner Mayor Charlie Clark
• Commissioner/Councillor Zach Jeffries
• Commissioner/Councillor Hilary Gough
• Commissioner Shirley Greyeyes
• Commissioner Brent Penner
Commissioner Custead was first appointed to the Board in December 2017. As Chair, Custead’s priorities have been ensuring the Police Commission continues to perform in its role as defined in The Police Act, 1990, which states that the Board is responsible for the delivery of policing services, which includes providing general direction, policy and priorities and developing long-term plans for the police service.
Retired lawyer Commissioner Kearney Healy, also a four-year Board member, was re- appointed to the role of Vice Chair for 2022. With 32 years working for Saskatchewan Legal Aid, Healy’s top priorities as Police Commissioner have focused on providing objective oversight of the Saskatoon Police Service while identifying potential strategies for the interaction between the Police Service, marginalized youth and all members of the community in order to continue to reduce violence in Saskatoon.
The Board is sincerely grateful for the excellent insight and experience Councillor Loewen brought to the Board. “Councillor Loewen was a member of the committee that hired our current Police Chief, and her attention to detail in work like budgeting was truly beneficial and strengthened our police budget approval process,” says Chair Jo Custead.
Commissioner Hilary Gough has served on City Council since 2016. “We are pleased to have Councillor Gough join the Board this year,” says Chair Custead. “Her work on Council in leading the strategic priority area of Community Wellbeing and Safety with a focus on affordable housing and rental property issues, poverty alleviation, and crime prevention will be a huge asset to the Board as we work to tackle these tough social issues and we look forward to her expertise.”
