Saskatoon Police Chief Recruitment Process

Today the Saskatoon Board of Police Commissioners, through Mayor/Commissioner Charlie Clark who is temporarily acting in the position of Board Chair, is sharing information on the process that will be used to recruit the 13th Chief to lead the Saskatoon Police Service (SPS).

The Board has selected an independent recruitment firm and will be meeting with them soon to formally contract their services and get the hiring process underway. A process timeline has also been drafted, beginning with the issuing of a job posting in a few weeks’ time. The Boardwill work closely with the recruitment firm to select and interview candidates. Barring unforeseen circumstances, the Board hopes to make the final selection of a candidate sometime in spring, with the new Chief in place early this summer if possible.

While a job description has not been fully developed, the Board will be looking for a police chief who can provide the organizational leadership that is needed to help the SPS keep pace withthe work done to date on policing in an ever growing, diverse community.

“We need someone who can relate to the people in our community, who are coming from very different locations and backgrounds,” says Mayor Clark. “With increasing pressures to partner and be more proactive, the Board is looking for a leader who will help the SPS continue to adapt to increasing challenges in policing, including being a part of a continuum of care to address gaps in health care services, mental health and addictions supports, and a shortage of housing.”

“Our Board has said many times that we feel our Police Service is the best in Canada, and that’s because of the people we have both in leadership and on the front lines who are helping to keep our community safe,” Clark adds. “We need a chief who can continue to build a culture within the entire police service to continue this work, while ensuring the health and well-being of our members is top of mind.”

Throughout the process the Board will provide updates to the public/media through the Chair at Public Meetings of the Board as well as updates directly to internal SPS staff.
