Saskatoon Board of Police Commissioners Announces Deputy Chief Cameron McBride as New Chief of Police for the Saskatoon Police Service
Today the Saskatoon Board of Police Commissioners is pleased to announce that Deputy Chief Cameron McBride will assume the role of Chief of Police for the Saskatoon Police Service effective May 16, 2024, for a five-year term.
“Incoming Chief McBride, both through his achievements in his 27-year policing career and through this recruitment process, demonstrated to the Board his exceptional leadership skills, an ability to think strategically, and an absolute commitment to upholding the principles of justice and public service in our community,” said Shirley Greyeyes, Chair of the Saskatoon Board of Police Commissioners.
A member of the Saskatoon Police Service since 1997, Incoming Chief McBride has seen the police service grow, evolve, and become stronger in areas like diversity and equity. He has progressed through the ranks, taking on increasingly more complex roles and responsibilities along the way. He recently led an in-depth review of each department within the police service in an examination of workload and capacity. Over the years, he has built strong relationships with many front-line community service organizations and shown excellence in leading teams in several areas of the police service.
The planning process for recruitment, evaluation and selection of the Chief of Police began in early 2024, after former Chief Troy Cooper announced his retirement from the Saskatoon Police Service. In February 2024, Leaders International was hired to support the Board in its work to recruit a new Chief with the goal of hiring a new Chief in the spring.
“Our recruitment process was robust, and included a national search for candidates, consultation with external policing and community partners as well as Saskatoon Police Service staff,” said Greyeyes. “We were fortunate to receive interest from several internal candidates and numerous external candidates from across Canada, some of whom participated in a series of interviews and presentations to the Board. We believe the interest we received is a testament to the reputation our Police Service has of being a forward thinking and innovative organization and we thank all those who applied and participated in the process with us.”
The Board is grateful to the staff at SPS, both front line and civilian officers, for their patience during the recruitment process. “We are particularly thankful to Interim Chief Dave Haye who stepped into the role of Chief of Police without hesitation,” said Greyeyes. “The leadership he provided over the past few months was exceptional, and we thank him and all of the staff for their service to our community.”
The date for a formal Swearing in Ceremony to be held in honour of Incoming Chief Cameron McBride will be announced soon.
